Taming A Fur Lined Razor Blade

We’ve had an approximately 5 week old black kitten running around our area for the past two weeks.  Momma cat finally found him and took him home however 2 days ago he was back.  Rod almost drove over him in the driveway.

Our dogs being the helpful souls they are "found" him for me – hiding under a stack of pallets at the end of our house.  Of course this was when we were having one of the more violent thunderstorms rumbling through here.

I grabbed one of my traps, put a bowl of water outside the trap and a bowl of canned cat food inside the trap and placed the trap into a large trash bag.  I surrounded the trap with the pallets to keep any other animals from getting to the kitten whenter or not he gets into the trap.

Two days ago the little Tazmanian Devil cat was brought into the house and placed in a large cage in the family room.  Inside the cage was a fluffly blanket for kitty to lay on, bowl of kitten milk replacer, bowl of dry food, a bowl of canned food & a litter box.  He’s a bit too young to be able to survive just on dry food but it is there for him to try out.  The entire cage was then covered, a radio placed next to the cage & a lamp.  Other then to check on food, milk & clean litter the fur lined razor blade is left alone for the next 12 hours.  Of course we get the growling, hissing & swiping with all the claws he has.  Always amazes me how one so young can be so mean.

Yesterday we received much less growling, hissing & swiping.  I am now pestering the kitten with my presence and chattering.  By the days end he allows me to pet his back end while eating.

This morning I was allowed to pet the entire length of the kitten.  I no longer get growling & hissing but I am "talked to".  He is no longer crouching at the far back of the cage when I approach.  This morning he was sitting at the front of the cage and "friendly" greeted me when I went over to him.

Owner died leaving 4 declawed cats that need homes.

HI, I rec’d this email from a woman, Robin, who’s Uncle suddenly passed away recently and he has 4 beautiful declawed cats that need homes. Robin lives out of state is trying desperately to get these cats good homes. They do not need to be adopted together.
Can anyone possibly help her? Descriptions and info below.
Please reply to Robin at bt73098@verizon.net .
With adoptions so slow and kittens galore, I’m sure this will be a miracle if anyone can help her…I have provided Robin with re-homing info/tips that’s listed on the resource page of www.kcpets.org as well.
THANKS ALL for your good work!
Debi Herman, Indep.

ROBIN WROTE:
I do have more information on the cats. I am also working on finding out the vets name to get copy of the records. For now the neighbor can continue to check on the cats daily and the house does need extensive work done before it can be sold so I think that buys us some time.

Just do email for now and then I can give my mother’s number to potential adopters.

Sammy, 13yrs, big male, front declawed, very snuggly and loving, tortoise hair color.

Patches, under 5yrs, small female, all 4 feet declawed, Calico, shy and loving.

Blossom, under 5 yrs, small female, front declawed, shy but playful. ( not sure of her color as she has been in hiding but hope to find out from the lady who has been taking care of them in the next day or two as the cats all come out for her.)

Scooter, under 5yrs, small female, front declawed, Grey, very playful ( may have a home for her. A friend of the family has spoke up that she may be interested )

I hope this helps. I will continue to find out more information and hopefully homes for these wonderful cats.

Thanks again for all your help. It means so much to me and I know my Uncle would appreciate it. His passing was so unexpected. No one new he was ill as he kept to himself a lot so it was a shock when we found out he had been taken to the hospital where he passed away the next day. I think I am still in shock.

Robin

Misty Killed, More Cats Need Help, Independence, MO

From: Cabfab4@aol.com
Date: Sun, 3 Jul 2005 00:21:09 EDT

We weren’t able to save poor Misty, but maybe some of these wonderful cats can be helped. I counted the cats and kittens at the Indep. Mo shelter today and there are at least 45 that are available to adopt, all shapes, sizes, colors, breeds, and ages. There are Siamese, Maine Coon, DSH, DLH and every one of them deserves to live. Some of them are on petfinder.com, but most are not and quite frankly, by the time pictures are taken, put on web and sent out, many will need to be put down because there is NO room. The shelter will be open Tues., Thurs. Fri 11:00-5:00, Wed. 11:00-6:00 and Sat. 11:00-3:00. Please come to the shelter and help save them. Thanks! Cheryl
