While our feral kitten was eating the petting began. Started on the back end and eventually worked my way up to his head. Did this the entire time he was eating. Every once in a while he would turn around and look at my hand as it got closer to his ears. After he was done eating we proceeded to the dreaded "pick the kitty up" stage. He was very wiggly not wanting to be held but I kept a hold of him quietly petting for several minutes. I put him down and left him alone for about an hour. I went back and picked him up again this time we got purrs. We repeated this process several times during the course of the day.
