I am writing for the benefit of two (possibly three) feral cats that have made a 3 – 4 block territory their own. I believe they are all siblings. They were born about a year ago to a cat under someone’s concrete front porch steps, and were not rescued or humanized. I only discovered this information two weeks ago, when asking questions of random people in the blocks around my own.
I am in a place that is a poor choice to construct a feral cat colony. I am wanting to find a place for these cats, in a colony that is already in place. I am prepared to catch them (humane traps), pay to have them spayed/neutered, and deliver them to such a colony. I considered trying to construct shelters on the back deck or underneath patio, but fear it may bring even more ferals to the backyard, and the neighbors around me would not like this. My home does not back up to a woods, or I would consider it.
These cats are similar in appearance; one is a pretty tortie, the second looks like a gray tabby/ tortie mix. The third looks like a mixture between the two. I feed two of them; the other one lives on another block and doesn’t venture over, although I see it with consistency when I drive down that street. I feel I could catch it with permission from home-owners, where it seems to gravitate.
There is an apartment complex close to woods, not far from the block where the cats were born; I feel certain one of the ferals there came up and gave birth in the neighborhood area, then left the kittens for the woods again. The kittens grew up in the neighborhoods, and remained there.
I am also concerned about the ferals around the apartments, but am still trying to find out is someone is feeding them (I think so) and how many there might be. For now, I am concentrating on the three that live amongst the houses….
If anyone knows of a place where the ferals would be cared for in cat colonies watched over by caretakers (food, shelters, etc.) – via an organization or rescue group – I would be interested in knowing about this before it gets cold out. I want to do right by these cats, if I can.
Thank you for any information or help you could give me and the cats…..
